2024 Mazda CX-90 vs CX-9: What's the Difference?

More Powerful Engine

One of the biggest differences between these two SUVs is their choice of engines. Whereas the Mazda CX-9 had a 2.5L engine with 250 horsepower, the Mazda CX-90 has a larger and more powerful 3.3L engine, with 280 horsepower in base trims. An even more powerful variant, the Mazda CX-90 Turbo S, has 340 horsepower, making it the most powerful Mazda on the market.

Improved Fuel Economy

In addition to an all-new engine, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is more fuel-efficient than the Mazda CX-9. Even though the engine is larger and more powerful than the outgoing model, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 has up to 25 combined MPG*, compared to 24 combined MPG* with the previous Mazda CX-9.

Additional Seating Capacity

Whereas the outgoing Mazda CX-9 SUV had three rows of seats, just like the new Mazda CX-90, it only had space for up to seven passengers. The Mazda CX-90, on the other hand, can seat up to eight passengers in the base trim level. Even with the more luxurious 2nd-row captain's chairs, which reduces seating capacity, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 would have just as many seats as a base-level CX-9.

New Rear Seat Alert Feature

Although both the Mazda CX-9 and the new Mazda CX-90 have advanced driver safety and assistance features, only the 2024 Mazda CX-90 comes with the new Rear Seat Alert feature. This safety system is designed to help prevent leaving any occupants or objects in the rear seats when exiting your vehicle.
